Unless you meant Leviathan or Quetzalli, I really am at a loss on this one! I have 5 empty slots in the Esper page- one is Odin, a couple are at the end so maybe postgame, but the other two I do not know.

From the description it sounds like they were describing Quetzalli, but I don't know for sure.

I can't tell what Espers you're missing, but there should definitely be 2 you can't get at this point in the game. There's always one blank spot in your Esper list so that you can unequip an Esper, and yeah, I think Odin ends up creating another blank spot because of the transformation, so I don't recall what those other ones should be.

Earlier in the day "Sony" started trending on Twitter because it was filled with tweets of people dunking on MS and using this as a reason why people should play Playstation instead. That's not the kind of publicity you want to give to your competitors. Might have played a part in the backtracking.

Also, the fact that it was reversed so easily just makes me think how much this decision was based on pure greed and not by any metric of needing to cover increasing costs or anything like that.

Due to a programming quirk Gogo can only use Magic in the Tower if you give them an Attack command.

While you can learn Meteor from a different Esper, some people preferred to not transform Odin because it was the only Esper to grant a Speed level up bonus. But the added Espers in the GBA version cover that now.

Random fact, while it was called the Gem Box in the SNES translation, when it reappeared in other games the Soul of Thamasa was mistranslated as "Samantha Soul" for years and years. It's something I find really funny. Like, I had always wondered who the hell was Samantha...

That stutter thing when Vision forgot the discrepancies of the world they're in was well done. I like how it looked like a streaming error.

I also liked the references to how tv shows try to hide actress pregnancies.

At first I thought Wanda was trapped in this world or wasn't clearly aware of what was happening, but now she's being a lot more disturbing and it looks like she has much more control over things than I assumed and I can't wait to see where it goes. I also wasn't sure if the world they were in was some kind of parallel world or something, but it looks more like it's an actual place that's being warped by magic.

I don't quite know why "Geraldine" was wearing a pendant that blows her cover so badly, but maybe there'll be an actual reason. Otherwise it just feels like a kinda dumb way to move the plot forward.

For Overwatch Arcade I usually play Deathmatch and Hero Gauntlet to get my boxes. In those modes nothing matters but your own personal skill. When I want to just have fun I play Mystery Heroes.

In MH you have no choice but to play for fun. There are definitely games where the RNG just serves you up a steaming pile and you just have to accept running across a team with a Bastion, double shields and multiple Mercys. If you have a hard time getting over the "sometimes you're just dealt a bad hand" mentality when it comes to teammates, Mystery Heroes will sure put you in line.

Yeah, this feels like a very specific post, but I guess Overwatch is the only team game I regularly play anyway, so I'll answer specifically.

...because it's fun? Yeah, you do get a lot of throwers and trolls, but I generally have more fun games than I do ruined games. I think the most enjoyable part is when me or my team pop off and take out an entire group of opponents, and I think that makes it worthwhile compared to say a individual free-for-all mode where your attention is more divided and it's harder to focus targets and make fun plays. So it's worth putting up the occasional game where teammates throw, and to be fair, you can still work around one bad teammate if it comes to it.

If you inspect the spot where Mog was staring at you'll get a Relic that eliminates random encounters.

If you fail to save Shadow then it's Relm who is found in the caves. The original English translation didn't account for this, so the dialogue would refer to the person as female either way, which set off a LOT of conspiracy theories about Shadow's identity back in the day....

I guess I should mention by now there are two secret characters you can get if you search for them. I can't remember if there were good hints in the game for them, so I don't want to just give it away if you want to search for yourself, but you were very close to one of them, so I'll throw out my own hints and give the answer in a separate spoiler if you give up.

First character: You were close but...
Hint: You should explore Narshe more.
Answer: Jump down the hole where Valigarmanda was to find more of the mines.

Second character:
Hint: Explore the island to the northeast of the world map.
Answer: Let the Zone Eater enemy eat your entire party.

From what I recall there's randomly spawning map tiles that, if you collide with them, triggers the Deathgaze battle. Because of the way the Mode 7 flying graphics work it can be very hard to actually tell where these tiles are. The best way to force a Deathgaze battle if you really need it is to position the airship so that it's at an slanted angle compared to the world map, and then flight straight. If you fly straight at a angle, you'll eventually pass through every single tile on the map as you continually circle the globe and will guarantee a Deathgaze encounter after enough time.

As someone who likes old sitcoms I'm really enjoying this non-ironically. I'm kind of worried the overall meta-plot will end up being disappointing because I genuinely enjoy these takes on classic tv film-making. The direction and aesthetic of how they handle each era is really good.

Yeah. This point in the game is like final act in Final Fantasy V; you technically can just jump straight to the final dungeon right now if you wish, but you're expected to explore the world doing sidequests to gain more power and experience.

That's also a bit of the reason why the plot is not as strong now, you have the ability to do things in whatever order you like, or skip certain things, so the game can't rigidly enforce storylines like before.

Yes, a lot of people like to hint that you can keep Cid alive ahead of time in playthrough topics and I kind of dislike it. While it is a neat easter egg, it changes absolutely nothing, and dying makes the entire sequence more impactful and is what will happen to most first-time players, so I wouldn't want to recommend it to someone going through their initial play.

andylt posted...
I wonder how many people lost him here their first time playing!
On the other hand you could say the same thing about this. I don't think any first-time player is expected to save Shadow. It really is one of those incredibly obtuse secrets that Final Fantasy likes to do a lot. But losing him as a character is a pretty huge deal and kind of upsetting to learn afterwards as a player, so I feel it's appropriate to mention it whenever someone is playing for the first time so they can avoid it.

So, now's the point we need to talk about an important missable thing in the game. You can permanently lose a character forever in the next dungeon, so while I would normally avoid spoiling things, you might want to pay attention to this. I'll try not to go into too much detail though to keep plot elements a secret:

Basically, near the end of the next dungeon you will be put under a time limit and will have to escape before it runs out. At the very end, you'll be asked if you want to escape or wait a little longer. Choose to wait, then try to escape again. You'll be asked specifically if you want to leave or "Wait for [character]". Choose to wait again, then do NOTHING. Don't touch the controller or anything. Just let time run out, and when it does you'll automatically leave with the character. Otherwise that character will die and can't be used anymore.

Really wish they had cut that out in the GBA translation

It works surprisingly well, although it requires a lot of setting up to get it to work. Another bonus aside from combining analog controls with mouse aiming is that certain actions work really well mapped to the trigger buttons rather than keys.

Downsides are you'll REALLY want to have a mouse with buttons, and depending on the game you might not have enough to spare (although it's still pretty easy to hit a keyboard key even with a Joy-Con in your hand for non-critical stuff like menus). Also, pray you don't get Joy-Con drift...

That surprises me. It looks like it would play like a Diablo game.
It's much more of an action game where you need to maneuver and dodge attacks. Having a joystick to do this is much better than WASD. You lose a bit of aiming control, but the auto-aim is decent, if iffy.

Honestly I've been meaning to try hybrid controls sometime. I have it set up on a few other games where I can connect my Switch Joy-Cons and have one in my left hand with my mouse in my right hand. Seems like it would work really well with this game.

I keep trying them and keep realizing it's not for me, but then I keep trying them because maybe this will be the one that's different. But it's still not for me.
The learning curve for these games are pretty freakin' massive, but I think World (and now Rise) did a lot to make it more accessible.

As mentioned above, a LOT of it has to do with finding which weapon works for you. There are 14 different types, and while it might be easy to think that they all work similarly but have different moves like in other video games, they actually all have VERY different gameplay styles from one another, and all change the way you play the game significantly. A big mistake I feel is that many people only try a few weapons and then give up if it doesn't work out. But it's a good idea to try them all out and find out which one "clicks" for you. Every player is different. A lot of people find that Dual Blades or Longsword work best for them, but for me I didn't really get into the game until I tried Switch Axe, which is considered to be a very newbie-unfriendly weapon. Sometimes it's just all about trial and error.

Additionally, the games don't do a great job at all at explaining the combos and gameplay mechanics of each weapon that well. Once you understand them, the gameplay experience opens up a LOT. I highly recommend looking at the weapon tutorials Arekkz Gaming made for World (while not exact, most of the moves transferred over to Rise) to get an understanding on how to use the weapons. They reveal a lot of critical information towards using the weapon that the in-game tutorial doesn't. It may seem like a bit of a commitment, but honestly, every time I watched one of these videos for a weapon I hadn't tried before, it made me want to rush out and try them out immediately and I ended up having a lot of fun doing it:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHc2Wj95htvMxZR7dvgYwevupNBy9imiu

EDIT: Also want to mention, the reason I linked to Arekkz's Monster Hunt World guides is because he hasn't uploaded all videos for how the weapons work in Rise yet, but he's doing so currently, so you might to check those out on his channel instead if there's one up, in case there are major differences in the weapon in the new (like Hunting Horn), or to understand the button press changes going from Playstation to Switch. That said, because it's from the demo, they're not as in-depth as the World guides, so it might be worth watching both if you're really interested in a weapon type.

WazzupGenius00 posted...
I've gotten so used to old Hunting Horn (well, new-old Hunting Horn, not old-old 1st & 2nd gen Hunting Horn which was just awful) that I'm actually having trouble with this new setup
Yeah. I was so confused at first. I kept on trying to figure out how to play songs. Then I realized you play them automatically now! You can play the notes to immediately get the buff, and if you play one of each note, you can use the performance to unleash all three songs at once as a powerful attack. Performance by itself just grants Self-Improvement. If you damage the monster enough, you build up a meter to the left of your songlist. When the meter is full, you can press ZR after doing the three-song performance or after the X Silkbind attack to do another powerful Performance move that grants you a new extra buff. The A Silkbind attack is simply a ridiculously powerful move.

So you essentially have three powerful Limit-break style moves. Song maintenance is no longer really a thing. You can just keep buffs up by regularly attacking, or by using the triple-song Performance. You might want to intentionally prime the Triple-Song when you can so you have a strong move to use when you need it, but the A Silkbind attack should be used when you have an opening. Otherwise just keep attacking to build up your meter. Hunting Horn is so much fun now, and I had already thought it was pretty fun before.

It's kind of like the FFV problem where you're supposed to want to save the crystals, but you kind of want them to get destroyed since it means fun new powerups.

Cue an on-rails sequence, and this time the graphics haven't quite held up so well.
I wouldn't say that. Even back in the day this sequence looked horrible...

This is our first fight with Setzer, who has a slot machine gimmick. Oh boy, I generally don't use gamble tricks and his character hasn't drawn himself to me so I can see me ditching this guy pretty quickly. There isn't an insta-game over slot in this one, is there?
Yes there is. And I remember when I first rolled it, it was during some long sequence of events and I was pissed at having to restart the whole thing over. Never used it again.

...exactly when, I have no idea. The official website says it's out now, but it's not.

But while you're waiting you can check out the Monster Hunter digital event video:

The most impressive thing though is the music- I don't know how they worked this out, but the lyrics fit with the music pretty much perfectly (this could be a GBA alteration)
Yup. The original translation for this was... really bad. It was perfectly well-enough written, but it didn't follow the music at ALL. The GBA translation of it is a wonder, as it translates the lines well, sticking close to the original themes, and sounding like an actual song would sound like, while also going along with the rhythm of the music.

I know some people prefer the SNES lyrics because of nostalgia, but at certain Final Fantasy live concerts they'll play Maria and Draco and it's so much more clearer how amazing the new translated lyrics sound and work. I went to Distant Worlds a couple of years ago and they performed the entire opera sequence, with real opera singers playing the parts and a professional narrator and it was easily the most incredible performance of the night. The standing ovation lasted for like three straight minutes. You can hear what it would have sounded like here:
